Essential first aid steps for common pet emergencies
Choking
- Stay calm and restrain your pet safely
- Open the mouth and look for visible objects
- Try to remove with tweezers (be careful not to push deeper)
- For small pets: Hold upside down and pat back
- For large pets: Lift hind legs, push on belly
- Rush to emergency vet immediately
Heat Stroke
- Move pet to cool, shaded area immediately
- Apply cool (not cold) water to paws and belly
- Offer small amounts of cool water to drink
- Use fan or air conditioning if available
- Monitor breathing and consciousness
- Contact vet immediately for further guidance
Wounds & Bleeding
- Apply direct pressure with clean cloth
- Elevate wounded area if possible
- Do not remove embedded objects
- Clean minor wounds with saline solution
- Apply antibiotic ointment if available
- Bandage lightly and seek veterinary care
Poisoning
- Remove pet from source of poison
- Do NOT induce vomiting unless instructed by vet
- Keep sample of suspected poison
- Call poison control or emergency vet immediately
- Follow professional instructions exactly
- Monitor breathing and consciousness
Seizures
- Keep calm and do NOT touch the pet
- Remove dangerous objects from around pet
- Note the time and duration of seizure
- Do not put anything in pet's mouth
- Speak softly and reassuringly
- Contact vet immediately after seizure stops
Fractures
- Keep pet calm and restrict movement
- Do not attempt to set the bone
- Support injured limb with towel or blanket
- Transport carefully on flat surface
- Apply ice pack wrapped in cloth
- Get to emergency vet as quickly as possible
