Frequently Asked Questions
Most dogs should be bathed every 4-6 weeks, but this varies by breed, coat type, and lifestyle. Dogs with oily coats (like Basset Hounds) may need weekly baths, while dogs with water-repellent coats (like Golden Retrievers) should be bathed less frequently. Over-bathing can strip natural oils and cause skin irritation.
Basic grooming like brushing, nail trimming, and ear cleaning can be done at home with proper tools and techniques. However, professional grooming is recommended for breed-specific cuts, matted fur removal, or if your pet is anxious during grooming. Start with simple tasks and gradually build your skills.
Essential grooming tools include: a quality brush or comb (specific to your pet's coat type), pet-safe shampoo, nail clippers, ear cleaning solution, toothbrush and pet toothpaste, and towels. For cats, add a scratching post and for long-haired pets, consider a de-shedding tool.
Start slowly with short sessions, use positive reinforcement (treats and praise), and make grooming a positive experience. Let your pet investigate the tools first. Begin with less sensitive areas and gradually work up to more sensitive spots. If your pet remains extremely anxious, consult a professional groomer or veterinarian.
Use pet-specific nail clippers and only trim the white/clear part of the nail, avoiding the pink "quick" which contains blood vessels. Cut at a 45-degree angle, trimming small amounts at a time. If you accidentally cut the quick, apply styptic powder to stop bleeding. Trim nails every 2-3 weeks for dogs and every 2-3 weeks for cats.
Brushing removes loose fur and distributes natural oils, while combing helps detect mats and tangles. Use brushes for general maintenance and de-shedding, and combs for detailed work around sensitive areas like the face and legs. Long-haired pets typically need both brushing and combing regularly.
Brush your pet's teeth 2-3 times per week using pet-safe toothpaste (never human toothpaste). Start by letting your pet taste the toothpaste, then gradually introduce the toothbrush. Dental chews, water additives, and special dental diets can also help maintain oral health. Regular veterinary dental checkups are important.
Start handling your puppy or kitten gently from 8-12 weeks old to get them used to grooming. Begin with short, positive sessions focusing on gentle brushing and touching paws, ears, and mouth. Full baths aren't necessary until they're older unless they get dirty. Early positive experiences make adult grooming much easier.
