Home & Garden Safety FAQs

Common toxic plants include lilies (especially dangerous for cats), azaleas, tulips, daffodils, oleander, sago palms, and poinsettias. Also avoid aloe vera, snake plants, rubber trees, and peace lilies. Keep chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, and xylitol-containing products away from pets. Always research new plants before bringing them home.

Secure cabinets with childproof latches, cover electrical outlets, remove or elevate toxic plants, secure loose wires, install safety gates, lock away medications and chemicals, remove small objects that could be swallowed, and secure trash cans. Check at your pet's eye level for potential hazards they might reach.

Safe indoor plants include spider plants, Boston ferns, bamboo palm, prayer plants, African violets, Christmas cactus, and Swedish ivy. Herbs like basil, cilantro, and parsley are also generally safe. Always verify specific plants for your pet type and consider placing even safe plants out of reach to prevent digging or overeating.

Install secure fencing appropriate for your pet's size and jumping ability. Remove toxic plants and mushrooms, avoid using pesticides or fertilizers, provide shade and fresh water, secure pool areas, check for holes or gaps pets could escape through, and remove any sharp objects or debris that could cause injury.

Keep all cleaning products, bleach, ammonia, toilet bowl cleaners, oven cleaners, furniture polish, antifreeze, pesticides, and rodenticides securely locked away. Even "natural" products like essential oils can be toxic to pets. Use pet-safe alternatives when possible and ensure proper ventilation when using any chemicals.

Choose pet-safe plants, create designated digging areas with sand or soft soil, install motion-activated sprinklers to deter unwanted behavior, use organic fertilizers, provide pathways to protect planted areas, ensure proper drainage to prevent standing water, and consider raised beds to keep pets away from delicate plants.

Contact your veterinarian or pet poison control hotline immediately. Don't induce vomiting unless specifically instructed by a professional. Keep the packaging of the ingested substance, note the time and amount consumed, and transport your pet to the vet clinic quickly. Quick action can be life-saving in poisoning cases.

Create climbing areas for cats using cat trees or shelves, provide hiding spots with boxes or tunnels, set up puzzle feeders for mental stimulation, rotate toys regularly, create safe outdoor viewing areas by windows, and designate specific play zones. Consider your pet's natural behaviors when designing enrichment spaces.
